Woodpecker at the floodplain forrests

During my numerous photography trips at the wetlands of several rivers here in Austria I am able to see a variety of birds. Birds that swim on the water, birds that live in the forests or wetlands or in the reeds that grows on the floodplains. A woodpecker like this great spotted woodpecker can be found in nearly every forest we have here in Austria, but I assume they live also very willingly in forest that grow at the floodplains. Probably they find enough insects and other food there.

Of course the woodpeckers also need trees that grow old and are not cut down so the insects can use the old tree for their home. This is why it is important not to cut down every tree that died and let the nature do the rest. The Insects will decompose the treen anyway in some years. A lot of insects feed on the dead trees and most of the birds feed on insects.
