While Living In California With Billionaire, Grimes Gets A $90,000 Canadian Arts Grant
Grimes, the successful and wealthy musician has received a large grant of over $90,000 from Factor, a Canadian arts subsidy program that is partially funded by the Canadian government.
News of the grant has sparked some controversy because of the fact that Grimes is a millionaire who doesn’t even live in Canada. The fact that she just had a child with Elon Musk, a billionaire and one of the richest people in the world, makes the grant look even more ridiculous. Grimes reportedly has a “net worth” of $3 million.
The story was initially reported by Niko Stratis, a Toronto-based freelance writer who noticed Grimes’s name when looking through Factor’s annual reporting.
Oddly enough, Grimes did legitimately qualify for the program, and is eligible under all of the current criteria, even though she no longer lives in the country.
Grimes did not personally apply for the funds, the application was made by her recording company, Crystal Math Music Inc. It is not clear if Grimes even knew that the application was being filled out in her name, as this is something that record companies often do.
Still, critics say that this is a slap in the face to the millions of talented starving artists who would benefit much more from a grant like that.
After the story reached the press, Factor responded with a statement saying that the money was for numerous artists on the label, not just Grimes. The organization said that recipients of grants don’t need to be Candian residents and also added that the record company is filled with a roster of artists that do live in the country.
However, the issue still stands that successful recording artists don’t really need this money, and this was an important complaint that Factor did not respond to in their recent statement.
